O Dia da Terra foi criado em 1970, pelo Senador norte-americano Gaylord Nelson, que convocou o primeiro protesto nacional contra a poluição, protesto esse coordenado a nível nacional por Denis Hayes. Esse dia conduziu à criação da Agência de Protecção Ambiental dos Estados Unidos (EPA).
The Earth Day was created in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, who convened the first national protest against pollution, protest that was coordinated nationally by Denis Hayes. That day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Em 1972 celebrou-se a primeira conferência internacional sobre o meio ambiente: a Conferência de Estocolmo, cujo objectivo foi sensibilizar os líderes mundiais para a amplitude dos problemas ambientais e para que se instituíssem as políticas necessárias para erradicá-los.
• O Dia da Terra é uma festa que pertence ao povo e não está regulamentada por nenhuma entidade ou organismo, nem relacionada com reivindicações políticas, nacionais, religiosas ou ideológicas.

In 1972 it was celebrated the first international conference on the environment: the Stockholm Conference, whose aim was to raise the awareness of world leaders to the extent of environmental problems and to establish the policies necessary to eradicate them.

• The Day the Earth refers to the awareness of the Earth's natural resources and their use, environmental education and our participation as an environmentally conscious and responsible citizens.

A partir de 1990, o dia 22 de Abril foi adoptado mundialmente como o Dia da Terra, dando um grande impulso aos esforços de reciclagem a nível mundial e ajudando a preparar o caminho para a Cimeira do Rio (1992).
Actualmente, a organização internacional, a Rede Dia da Terra coordena eventos e actividades a nível mundial que celebram este dia. http://www.earthday.net/
