On the eve of another commemoration of the Portuguese Revolution (also known as Revolution of April, Carnation Revolution or 25th of April) nothing could better summarize the joy and enthusiasm of that day as the poetry from Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen that tell us about the move forward from a world of gray and gloomy to a world of hope and achievement of a utopia...
(Of course I wouldn’t dare to translate her poetry)
A Revolução representou, para a maioria dos portugueses, o início de uma liberdade há muito aguardada, a institucionalização da democracia, a promessa do desenvolvimento e o fim da guerra.
The Revolution was, for most Portuguese, the beginning of a long-awaited freedom, the institutionalization of democracy, the promise of development and the end of the war.
Revolução, cujas senhas são canções e o símbolo uma flor, como já alguém disse, é natural que fosse apoiada entusiasticamente pela multidão que ocorreu às ruas saudando os militares.
Revolution, whose passwords are songs and the symbol a flower, as someone already said, naturally, it would be supported enthusiastically by the crowd that run to the streets welcoming the military.

A facilidade com que o regime autoritário caiu às mãos do seu próprio exército é a prova evidente do anacronismo e total isolamento em que tinha mergulhado a vida política portuguesa.
The ease with which the authoritarian regime fell at the hands of its own army is the clear evidence of the absurdity and total isolation in which the Portuguese political life had sunk.
É verdade que, 35 anos depois, não podemos fazer uma avaliação muito positiva da evolução do país que enfrenta dificuldades económicas, o descontentamento, o pessimismo e a mediocridade… Muitas publicações (sem censura) põem em causa Abril… mas, não é menos verdade que, se a memória não fosse curta, seria fácil lembrar que a vida e a política, antes de Abril não se caracterizavam pela elevação, a profundeza e a competência … mas pela repressão, mesquinhez, podridão, primitivismo e hipocrisia.
It is true that, 35 years later, we can not make a very positive assessment of the development of the country which is facing economic difficulties, the discontent, the pessimism and mediocrity ... Many publications (without censorship) put “April” into question... but the fact remains that if the memory was not short, it would be easy to remember that life and politics before “April” was not characterized by the elevation, depth and competence ... but by repression, meanness, rottenness, primitivism and hypocrisy.
Como nos diz hoje, dia 23, Maria de Medeiros, em entrevista ao JN, no âmbito da realização do ciclo “Música e Revolução“ (Porto, Casa da Música), respondendo à questão sobre a necessidade de um novo 25 de Abril no país: “Sou pela revolução permanente. O pensamento tem de estar sempre a revolucionar-se e a andar para a frente. Por vezes a História dá saltos em frente e, depois, parece que regredimos que andamos para trás.”
As, Maria de Medeiros, says today, April 23th in an interview to “Jornal de Notícias”, on the scope of "Music and Revolution" (Porto, Casa da Música), answering the question about the need for a new April 25th in the country: "I am for the permanent revolution. The thought must be always revolutionizing itself and moving forward. Sometimes the history jumps ahead and then it seems to go backwards. "
Por isso, 25 de Abril deve ser sempre mudança, criatividade e defesa de uma Utopia.
Therefore, April 25th should always be Change, Creativity and Defense of a Utopia.
25 de Abril, sempre! 25th of April, allways!
